The next generation of electric drives in the ID. it’s already running.

With the new APP550 rear drive unit, Volkswagen’s family of electric models will receive a completely newly developed drive unit.

In the future, this will offer increased performance combined with improved efficiency for the ID models. Therefore, the family ID. you will benefit both in terms of power and increased range.

Volkswagen plans to deliver the first vehicles with the new powertrain generation in a 210 kW (286 PS) version from the end of the year.

The design basis for the new powertrain remains the Modular Electric Drive Platform (MEB), Volkswagen’s vehicle architecture specifically tailored for electric models. Karsten Bennewitz, Head of Development Power and Transmission Systems:

“As the available space remains the same, we were forced to develop a new powertrain that would achieve significant improvements in performance and efficiency. It was a great challenge for the Group’s Technical Development and Components team.

The result shows that we have been able to reduce the use of raw materials and, at the same time, achieve a considerable increase in the efficiency of the vehicle.”

More power and considerably more torque

The new propulsion system offers a power output of 210 kW (286 PS) with a maximum torque of around 550 Nm, depending on the vehicle’s gear ratio.

In particular, the noticeably higher torque ensures superior power development, both from standstill and at higher speeds.

The new APP550 electric drive achieves its high torque thanks to an improved stator with a higher effective number of coils and a larger cross section of the wires.

The rotor, like its counterpart, is equipped with a more powerful permanent magnet that has a higher load capacity. The drive has also been strengthened to withstand the considerable torque produced.

The inverter supplies high current

The current intensity is a decisive factor for the power of an electric drive. As another vitally important component, the inverter has been developed to be capable of supplying the high phase currents necessary for greater power and efficiency.

It acts as the control “brain” of the propulsion system, whose software ensures the efficiency of the system’s processes.

This applies, for example, to frequency variations and modulation methods for generating the alternating current for the electric drive motor. In this way, the engine can run more efficiently depending on the load phase.

Optimized thermal management through intelligent cooling

To increase the efficiency of the electric drive, Volkswagen has optimized a number of powertrain components, including the thermal management system. Thus, the new engine has a low-consumption cooling system that works without an electric oil pump.

The system is capable of cooling itself independently through gearbox gears and specially designed components for oil supply and distribution.

The heated oil is cooled by the vehicle’s coolant circuit, which keeps the transmission at optimum operating temperature. The outside of the stator is equipped with a water heat sink.

Volkswagen Kassel as a production site for the electric drive system

The drive system with gearbox, rotor and stator will be manufactured at the Volkswagen Group Components plant in Kassel. Alexander Krick, Director of Technical Development for E-Drive, Power Electronics and Transmission at Group Components:

“We have been developing electric drive motors and their gearboxes for 15 years, and also more than 10 years producing them here in our plant.”

Product and process innovations in the electric drive motor and gearbox result in a significant increase in efficiency and performance.

Krick: “Leveraging our many years of experience, we have optimized the system through, among other things, the use of special electrical sheets and custom machining processes, and thus have been able to significantly increase efficiency.”
