Poland and Ukraine have reached an agreement in the conflict over the oversupply of cheap Ukrainian grain on the Polish market. “We have successfully concluded talks with the Ukrainian side on the transit of products from Ukraine through Poland,” Poland’s Agriculture Minister Robert Telus said on Tuesday following a meeting with his counterpart Mykola Solski and other Ukrainian government officials.
Each shipment of grain destined for transit will in future be accompanied by a convoy, Telus said. In addition, a monitoring system currently used to track, among other things, the shipment of waste and fuel destined for transit, is also to be introduced for grain transit from Ukraine. In addition, transit shipments of Ukrainian grain through Poland are to be secured with GPS seals. Minister Waldemar Buda announced that the transit of Ukrainian grain will resume at midnight on Friday.
Poland imposed an import ban on grain and other agricultural products on Saturday. The government in Warsaw was reacting to protests from farmers who felt pressured by cheap imports. Ukraine’s grain exports, restricted because of the Russian war of aggression, not only go via the Black Sea or the Danube, but also overland through Poland. However, onward transport is stagnating and the ports are overloaded. Telus has now announced that the four million tons of grain from Ukraine currently stowed in Polish warehouses will be delivered to third countries by July.
