“Sudan’s Health Sector in Crisis: Shortage of Energy and Blood Bags Threaten Lives”

The health sector in Sudan is facing collapse, in light of dwindling energy supplies and an acute shortage of blood bags, while the director of the World Health Organization called on both sides of the conflict in the country to “give access to medical facilities for all those who need care.”

The Department of Information, Public Relations and Protocol in Sudan issued a statement stating:

  • “A call for a sustainable solution to the shortage of energy supplies in health facilities and blood bags.”
  • “The health sector in Khartoum state is facing collapse, due to dwindling energy supplies, and hospitals are in need, in order to sustain the work of backup generators, in order to provide basic health services.”
  • “There is an acute shortage of blood bags in all the different states of Sudan.”.
  • “The Federal Ministry of Health has appealed to all that would save lives, and find a more sustainable solution to overcome the chronic shortage of fuel and energy, which is constantly putting health facilities in Khartoum on the brink of closure.”“.
  • “The power outage affects the continuity of service provision.”.

Urgent help needed

The statement also noted that hospitals are suffering to be able to treat the wounded who come to them, as a result of the clashes that have been going on for 4 days between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces.

According to the statement:

  • Khartoum hospital is now in dire need of fuel.
  • The blood bank urgently needs blood bags.
  • Jaber Abu Al-Ezz Hospital is also in dire need of blood.
  • Cold chain is needed for vaccines.

World Health” calls for “access to medical facilities”

  • The Director of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, called on both sides of the conflict in Sudan to “give access to medical facilities to all those who need care.”.
  • Adhanom Ghebreyesus: “I want to be clear, all parties must ensure that unrestricted and safe access to health facilities is provided to all those who are injured and those who need medical care.”“.
