Minister of Health sees motion for a resolution as a mandate Minister for Health sees motion for a resolution as a mandate

Vienna (OTS) The motion for a resolution tabled in today’s National Council Health Committee calls for a whole package of measures to improve the situation of those affected by ME/CFS. Health Minister Johannes Rauch welcomes the discussion of the topic and wants to implement the demands of the application: “For me, this is a clear mandate for all those involved to continue and strengthen the ongoing efforts.”

ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) is a recognized disease in Austria. It became known to a broader public during the corona pandemic because typical symptoms such as stress intolerance and pathological fatigue can also occur as a result of COVID-19 disease. ME/CFS requires a good interaction of the structures in the healthcare system in the detection and treatment. The path to the first diagnosis is particularly complicated for those affected due to the lack of a clear biomarker.

“In Austria, too, many people suffer enormously from ME/CFS. They are massively restricted in all areas of life. massive one. We have to support those affected as best we can: from the long road to diagnosis, through the search for the right treatment, to the social and financial consequences of the disease,” explains Health Minister Johannes Rauch.

Primary care as the first point of contact
Rauch sees the measures mentioned in the motion for a resolution as a “work order for all actors in the health system”. Measures for more education, the creation of an advisory committee, greater consideration in medical guidelines and increased research on ME/CFS are already in progress in some cases. The Ministry of Health is working closely with the decision-makers involved. In this way, the Austrian Society for General Practice makes a significant contribution to informing and networking physicians regarding postviral syndromes such as ME/CFS.

With the advent of Long-COVID and its similar symptoms, ME/CFS has also received more attention. “We absolutely have to use this momentum for the benefit of those affected,” stresses Minister Rauch.

The Minister of Health continues to see primary care as the first point of contact for the treatment of those affected by ME/CFS. General practitioners can make the decision regarding necessary examinations by specialists. The tripling of primary care centers by 2025 will thus make a significant contribution to improving medical care for patients.
