Starting at 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 18, the regional strike began in Piura, with roadblocks, suspension of the transportation service, demonstrations, and human blockades. The people of Piura demand that the government pay attention to the situation caused by the heavy rains of February and March and the red alert situation that they have been experiencing since yesterday due to the flooding of the Chira river.

Several accesses to the cities of Piura woke up blocked by groups of protesters who joined the regional strike. Measure called by the authorities, grassroots unions and civil society, as a measure of force to demand that the central government address the rain emergency facing the second most populous region in the country. There are already more than 70,000 people affected by heavy rainfall that causes flooding in different districts of the department.

In Sechura, members of the Defense Front of the San Martín Peasant Community have formed pickets on the bridge to enter the city. The carriers of this province joined the demonstration.

On the Bajo Piura route, the Panamericana Norte highway, via Piura-Chiclayo, is also blocked at the height of the El Tabanco sector. The same occurs on the Piura-La Unión road.

Governor Luis Neyra also joined the strike

Despite initially ruling out supporting the force measure, the regional governor, Luis Neyra, decided to join the strike. This in order to claim the budget transfer that Piura needs to care for the victims and carry out prevention works in the face of an imminent new rain phenomenon.

“Piura has been forced to take to the streets to listen to the Piurans that we also deserve investment in lasting works. We need a storm drainage system, reservoirs, comprehensive management of the river. Piura does not deserve to be flooded and submerged in blind basins, we deserve respect and more attention, ”he emphasized in a local media.

In the city of Piura there are also pickets: on the road to the Miraflores hamlet (Medio Piura), Los Ejidos, Cuarto Puente. In addition, there is a mobilization of protesters towards the Provincial Municipality of Piura.

The Highway Police reported that the Sullana-Tambogrande route has also been blocked, at the height of the Sinchi Roca hamlet.

The people who abide by the regional strike have also placed branches on the Sullana-La Tina highway, at kilometer 1080, at the height of the Hualtaco hamlet. The Los Órganos highway, in the province of Talara, near Zarumilla, has also been blocked.

The blockades of various roads began at dawn on Tuesday the 18th, in compliance with the regional strike that summons authorities, unions and citizens in the face of the emergency they are experiencing and in fear of the new El Niño phenomenon.

Through statement No. 20-2023, the Piura Regional Directorate of Education (DREP) reported that face-to-face classes in public and private schools will be suspended this Tuesday, April 18. Due to the regional strike called by the authorities and civil society.

“That in order to safeguard the safety and physical integrity of our students, teachers, administrative and managerial staff, face-to-face classes will be suspended. Both in public and private institutions on April 18. In this way, the necessary coordination and strategies are proposed to guarantee compliance with the educational service through the distance modality”, reads the statement issued by the DREP.
