In the minds of many women, vaginal douche is associated with a group of misconceptions regarding its benefits and harms, which they treat as scientifically proven facts.

Myths regarding vaginal douche

1- The vaginal douche does not cause infection

It has been proven that the use of vaginal douche leads to a change in the pH of the vagina, and then encourages harmful bacteria to grow and multiply in the female genital organs, causing some infectious diseases, most notably:

– Bacterial vaginosis.

Yeast infection.

The vaginal shower causes a disturbance in the antibodies responsible for producing proteins to combat the microbes in the outer layer of cells lining the vagina.

2- The vaginal douche does not threaten the urinary tract with infection

Women who use douching excessively are more likely to get a urinary tract infection than those who don’t use it at all to clean the female genitals.

3- The vaginal douche eliminates the bad smell of the vagina

A woman who suffers from bad vaginal odor should visit a doctor, to find out its cause and get treatment, because a vaginal shower helps to remove it temporarily.

4- The vaginal douche prevents sexually transmitted diseases

Some women are keen to use the vaginal douche following having sex, because they believe that it reduces the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases, but the truth is that it does not help in preventing them, because it is not effective in removing semen from the vagina.

5- Douche is safe during pregnancy

Women who douched more than once a week had a 76% higher risk of ectopic pregnancy, as well as miscarriage and premature delivery.
