Never give access to your computer! Since the beginning of the year, the Microsoft scam has been gaining momentum. The Neuchâtel police have recorded 51 cases, including eight attempts, for a cumulative damage of 50,000 francs. For comparison, 103 were counted in the whole of 2022. The bad guys contact you pretending to be technical support workers in order to take control of your computer. And they are smart! They make you believe, for example, that your computer has been hacked or that it is infected with a virus and assure you that they will solve your problem. Put in trust, the victims give access to their computer or transmit their bank details. Once the bad guy is in your computer, it’s too late. And each of us can be confronted with this kind of scams.

People who have been scammed should not blame themselves. These thugs know how to be very persuasive and play on fear. The Neuchâtel Police recommends that victims report each case of fraud to them, which will allow them to act on the preventive side and to avoid as much as possible that other people experience the same setbacks. On the other hand, filing a complaint following being scammed does not help much.

As we said, thugs are well-honed and know how to persuade. Without becoming paranoid, you have to be wary and above all never give access to your computer or your bank details to a stranger. There are a few simple golden rules to avoid getting tricked.
