Journalist Mervat Al-Azzeh, the Palestinian public opinion, was subjected to sexual harassment inside a hospital where she was being treated, as a result of her injury in a traffic accident in the city of Bethlehem.

Through a video clip she posted on her Facebook account, Al-Azza announced that she had been sexually harassed by an x-ray technician in a hospital last month. The journalist recounted the details on the 14th of April, saying that she was involved in a traffic accident on the second of last March, and was transferred to a private hospital in the city of Bethlehem in the southern West Bank, following she was completely shattered in the bone of the wrist and hand, and while she was in the hospital, she was surprised by the x-ray technician while she was in shock. She was injured in a car accident, he harassed her.

She revealed that she left the room and tried to scream and ask people for help, but a security officer silenced her, and then she went to her bed in the emergency room, and when the hospital director was present, he told her: “God is among you,” and that the hospital will investigate the matter.

She confirmed that several parties tried to intervene following that to close the matter and cover up the incident, but she insisted on filing a complaint with the Ministry of Health and the Public Prosecution.

She said that the Ministry of Health formed an investigation committee and asked her to come to the hospital and not to a neutral place.

She confirmed that the report of the investigation committee, which she obtained following a long wait, did not do her justice, stressing her refusal to settle the case and that she is continuing with the complaint to obtain her right.

For its part, the Palestinian Ministry of Health issued a statement saying that it “does not underestimate this type of complaint, and views it very seriously.”

In its statement, the Palestinian Ministry of Health called for the formation of a neutral investigation committee as quickly as possible, including the Journalists Syndicate (the complainant is a journalist), the Independent Commission for Human Rights, civil society organizations concerned with women’s rights, a representative of the complainant, and a representative of the Radiology Syndicate, and for the committee to seek the assistance of any party it deems appropriate. It is appropriate and important to uncover the truth, out of concern for preserving the dignity, rights and honor of patients and all male and female citizens, both within governmental, private and private health facilities, and to ensure the existence of a safe environment within health facilities, and to reveal the Palestinian public, and work to bring out the full truth.

The Ministry’s call for the formation of an impartial investigation committee comes following journalist Al-Azza questioned the integrity and transparency of the internal investigation committee, which refuted her story. The committee presented its results and recommendations to the Minister of Health, and the Public Prosecution and the Independent Commission for Human Rights were provided with copies of the findings and recommendations.
