Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) has drawn a positive balance of his three-day visit to Vietnam. Austria is “perceived insanely” in Vietnam. On the last day of the visit, Schallenberg was received by Industry and Trade Minister Nguyen Hong Dien.

Today, Schallenberg also met the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, Tran Thanh Man. The day before he had met Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Planning Minister Nguyen Chi Dung alongside his counterpart Bui Thanh Son.

Representatives of Andritz Hydro and Raiffeisen Bank International (RBI) also took part in the talks with the Minister of Industry and Trade. The two companies had signed agreements for the expansion or financing of hydroelectric power plants as part of a bilateral business forum. Representatives of the Chamber of Commerce (WKO) also accompanied Schallenberg.

Vietnam expressed a desire for more economic cooperation

Vietnam is pushing ahead with the energy transition and wants to “expand enormously” renewable energy sources in the coming years, reported Schallenberg. He once more admitted that Austria had “not done that much” to intensify economic relations. The Vietnamese side expressed “almost reproachfully” the desire for a stronger economic commitment from Austria.

The Foreign Minister also confirmed the intention that Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong should visit Austria this year. In this regard, Schallenberg suggested that the ministers responsible for economics also come along “to promote Vietnam in Austria”.
