A 42-year-old man was hanged at a La Matanza police station where he was detained for attempted robbery. Although the main hypothesis of the researchers points to a suicide, the family of the deceased accused the officers of the sectional.

The event occurred yesterday in Lomas del Mirador, in the same section where Luciano Arruga was arrested and tortured in 2008, the young man who disappeared the following year and was finally found dead in 2014.

Police sources reported that the deceased man was identified as Mauricio Castillo (42)who had been apprehended yesterday as accused of an attempted armed robbery whose victim was a young man.

Castillo was “in transit” at the 4th police station in La Matanza Oeste, following being arrested by personnel from the Police Detachment. Until that moment, when the police investigation began and the Investigation Prosecutor on duty in La Matanza, Andrea Palín, intervened. Castillo was the only detainee in the sectional.

Shortly following, the prisoner was found dead in the cellpresumably hanged with a jacket-type diver with which, apparently, he hung himself by the neck.

Faced with this situation, the Homicide Prosecutor of La Matanza, Karina Licalzi, intervened, who initiated proceedings for “investigation of causes of death”pending the results of the autopsy.

According to the sources, the preliminary report from the medical examiners established that Castillo suffered a “traumatic death by asphyxia by hanging” and that he had no other injuries. These preliminary conclusions reinforce, in principle, the suicide hypothesis, although the investigations await the final results of the necropsy plus other complementary studies.

They found a detainee hanged in La Matanza: what the family claims

Castillo’s death led last night and this morning to a protest demanding justice in front of the police station, where incidents occurred.

«My brother would never do that“Cinthia, a sister of the deceased, told C5N this followingnoon when asked regarding the possibility of suicide.

«He was a family person, a laburador. Good companion, good friend. That’s why the whole neighborhood is here“, said the woman, through tears, while the protesters blocked traffic on Brigadier General Juan Manuel de Rosas avenue, a few meters from the police station.

Cynthia said to be “one hundred percent sure” regarding the alleged involvement of the police and stated that his brother “They took him by mistake.”

Faced with this situation, the Internal Affairs Audit of the Buenos Aires Ministry of Security initiated an administrative investigation and ordered the intervention of the detachment and the police station while it is being carried out.

On the other hand, another case was opened in the Assistant Prosecutor for Institutional Serious Crimes of La Matanza, in charge of Claudio Fornaro, to determine the conditions of the accommodation and the staff at the police station at the time of the incident.

The judicial sources added that reports were required to establish whether said unit was enabled to house detainees.
