What role does interest in sex play, and from a stronger libido, on the risk of mortality? It is to answer this question that a team of Japanese researchers conducted a study with more than 20,000 people over the age of 40, followed over 7 years.
His results, published in the journal Plos One (Source 1) and reported by the Daily Mailsuggest that lack of sexual interest would be a risk factor for mortality all causes, at least in Japanese men over 40.
In all, 20,969 people (8,558 men and 12,411 women) aged 40 and over were recruited. All resided in Yamagata Prefecture, regarding 400 km from Tokyo, Japan. Participants were first asked regarding their interest in sex: among men, 7,032 (82%) said they were interested in sex, compared to 79% of women (9,551 women). The scientists then followed the participants for seven years, during which time 503 deaths were recorded. Of the 352 deaths that occurred among men, only 4% occurred among “sexually interested” men, compared to 8% among men who were not interested in sex.
By adjusting these data with possible bias factors (body mass index, age, marital status, etc.), the research team found that men with an interest in sex were significantly less likely to die (all causes combined) during the follow-up period (7 years). They had so a 69% reduced risk of death, which is not negligible. Note that such an association has not been found in women, without the researchers being able to explain why.
The interest of advocating sex among seniors
Recalling that a low libido is often Synonym of poor overall health (obesity, poor diet, psychological problems, etc.), the researchers point out that, conversely, high libido often rhymes with high sexual activitywhich allows, among other things, to reduce stress levels. “Further study is [toutefois] necessary for clarify the mechanisms that underlie the preventive effects of sexual interest on mortality”, say the researchers in conclusion.
They add that the results of the study “support this idea [selon laquelle] maintaining sexual interest has positive effects on longevity, especially in men”. The authors endorse the initiative of the Canadian government, which has begun to add sexual activity as one of the key elements of “ageing well”and invite the Japanese health authorities to work in the same direction, knowing that the sexuality of seniors is a particularly taboo subject in Japan.
