Kenyan Evans Chebet has won the Boston Marathon for the second consecutive year. He won in 2h05’54, far ahead of his compatriot and favorite Eliud Kipchoge, only 6th.
For his first participation in Boston, Kipchoge, double Olympic champion (2016, 2021), world record holder (2:01:09 in Berlin on September 25), was dropped at the 30th kilometer following an acceleration from the Tanzanian Gabriel Geay, finally 2nd.
Chebet, who achieved the first double in Boston since 2008, broke away from his last two pursuers in the last kilometers ahead of Geay and his compatriot Benson Kipruto.
Kenyan Hellen Obiri, middle-distance specialist, world champion in the 5000m in London in 2017 and Doha in 2019, won. She was participating in only the second marathon of her career.
On the last climb before arriving at Boylston Street, Obiri broke away to finally win in 2:21:38, improving her personal best by more than 3 minutes. She edged Beriso by 12 seconds and Kenyan-born Israeli Lonah Salpeter by 19.
The record for Hug
Marcel Hug crushed the competition at the Boston Marathon in the wheelchair category. The Thurgovian won his sixth victory by beating the course record.
Hug, who had already won this event from 2015 to 2018 and in 2021, won more than ten minutes ahead of the American Daniel Romanchuk, winner last year and in 2019. With a time of 1h17 ‘ 06, the Thurgovian even bettered his own course record set five years ago by 58 seconds.
Manuela Schär had to abandon the race prematurely. The Lucernoise had already won four times in Boston, including three times consecutively.
