How the Ministry of the Armed Forces relaunched a French industrial sector of synthetic quartz near Chambéry

This is the story of a rebirth. In Sainte-Hélène-du-Lac, regarding twenty kilometers south of Chambéry (Savoie), Cristal Innov produces very high quality synthetic quartz, an essential material for the design of radars or guidance and navigation systems, especially for military applications. A local production which had nevertheless disappeared in 2010, when the sole French and European supplier decided to refocus its activities on other productions.

Concerned regarding the security of its strategic supplies, the Directorate General of Armaments (DGA), a branch of the Ministry of the Armed Forces, then decided to take up this issue of sovereignty. With a budget of 1.87 million euros, the “Quartz” project was launched in 2014. Objective: to relaunch a technological sector for the production of high-quality synthetic quartz in France.
