Arcturus (officially named XBB.1.16) spread rapidly around the world. It accounted for only 0.21% of the global cases at the end of February, and it rose to 3.96% one month later. Experts at the Mayo Clinic in the United States say Arcturus is more transmissible than previous strains, but believes it has not become more dangerous. Arcturus appears to cause conjunctivitis, or red, itchy eyes, in younger patients, said Matthew Binnicker, director of Mayo Clinic’s clinical virology laboratory.
