Arcturus (officially named XBB.1.16) spread rapidly around the world. It accounted for only 0.21% of the global cases at the end of February, and it rose to 3.96% one month later. The WHO has listed Arcturus as “positive” since March 22. Virus strains for further monitoring” (Variants-Under-Monitoring). The Indian Ministry of Health announced on Sunday (16th) that there were 10,093 new cases within 24 hours, which was the fourth consecutive day that more than 10,000 new cases were added. The positive rate was 5.61%, and 19 people died. Officials of the Ministry of Health predicted that the number of confirmed cases may continue to increase in the next 10 to 12 days, but reiterated that the demand for hospital beds is not under pressure, and the public does not need to panic.

U.S. infections with Arcturus also doubled last week, with an estimated 7.2% of coronavirus samples from April 9-15 being Arcturus, up from 3.9% the previous week.

Experts at the Mayo Clinic in the United States say Arcturus is more transmissible than previous strains, but believes it has not become more dangerous. Arcturus appears to cause conjunctivitis, or red, itchy eyes, in younger patients, said Matthew Binnicker, director of Mayo Clinic’s clinical virology laboratory.
