ARCEP now wants to regulate the prices of electronic communications

The Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Posts (ARCEP) held a press briefing this Friday, April 14, 2023 at its headquarters in Ouagadougou following meeting with mobile telephone operators. The objective was to reassure the public that ARCEP’s missions are in line with the demands expressed by consumers in relation to the quality of operator services, but also to say what ARCEP is doing to satisfy the consumer.

ARCEP, through its executive secretary, Wendlassida Patrice Compaoré, reassured this Friday, April 14, 2023 that its missions are in line with the legitimate demands that have been expressed in recent times by the population, in particular on certain services of mobile telephone operators. related to the quality of their service, the cost and the quality of the internet connection.

Also, ARCEP admitted to having initiated consultations with consumer organizations and mobile telephone operators, and this for a very long time in order to improve the quality of services (technical quality of telephone coverage and connection internet, but also, the revision of tariffs to levels that are bearable by the greatest number of Burkinabè having access to internet services)

In fact, discussions with mobile telephony players and operators, the executive director of ARCEP indicated that the operators have promised to look into the problem of “the period of validity of the charging units”. To hear, Wendlassida Patrice Compaoré, the « operators have also committed to better management of consumer bonuses and to better explain the offers they make to consumers ».

On the other hand, on the pricing of the connection, the executive secretary of ARCEP indicated that this requires a study to be carried out and ARCEP, among other things, needs a certain number of elements at operator level. Also, Patrice Compaoré assured that the operators are already ready to provide the elements for the study.

With regard to the consultations, the executive secretary of ARCEP asked the ” Burkinabè to trust ARCEP and give the ongoing consultations a chance« .

To conclude, Wendlassida Patrice Compaoré indicated that for the supervision of the prices of electronic communication services, reforms are in prospect. “Decree 94 2011 on the terms and conditions for establishing and controlling the prices of electronic communication services will be proposed for review in order to give a hand to ARCEP for the supervision of prices”, announced the executive secretary of ARCEP.
