“Doubling of Conditionally Admitted Students to CEGEP Due to Pandemic – Insights and Solutions”

The number of students admitted conditionally to college has almost doubled since the pandemic. They must complete basic high school courses in CEGEP to be able to continue in their chosen program.

“It is certain that with the pandemic, we found ourselves immediately followingwards, with the return, with students who were much weaker”, declared to TVA Nouvelles the professor of philosophy at Cégep Lionel-Groulx, Frederic Perron.

From 627 for the 2018-2019 school year, this number rose to 1186 for the 2022-2023 school year. The teachers TVA spoke to saw issues they hadn’t faced before.

“Some are as motivated as before, others a little less. We live in an economic context with far fewer jobs available. So for some, it can be tempting to work more, or even too much, which is more difficult later on for studies,” says Steve McKay, philosophy professor at the Cégep de Sherbrooke.

“It’s been a while since we came back from the pandemic. Then, well… there’s not a marked improvement. It was just a little bit better. What I mean by that is that sometimes… In any case, the quality of French is definitely very, very poor for many students. Sometimes, too, the capacity for reasoning”, mentions Frédéric Perron.

Students also note a drop in motivation among their classmates, while teachers worry regarding the future.

The office of the Minister of Higher Education did not respond to our request for an interview. Teachers and students hope for actions to help motivation in these institutions.
