He had not published a novel since The Commander’s Murder in 2017. This April 13, the Japanese Haruki Murakami returned to the front of the stage with his new book. Written during the pandemic, The City and its uncertain walls was announced last February by publisher Shinchosha, ending the wait for fans of the author’s work.

Its release was an event in Japan, with dozens of readers present overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, gathered in front of Tokyo bookstores. Now 74, the writer has been evasive regarding this new work, saying only that he was like “an old dream in a library”. The manuscript had been kept secret until its publication, and the French publishing house Belfond has already announced the release of the book in the territory during 2025.

Regularly cited for the Nobel

Born in Tokyo in 1949, Haruki Murakami is today one of the most widely read contemporary authors in the world. At the origin of best-selling novels like Kafka on the shore (2002) et 1Q84 (2009), he also published essays, but also short stories like Drive My Caradapted for the cinema in 2021. A great reader of Raymond Chandler and F. Scott Fitzgerald, Murakami is also known for his translation work, from English to Japanese.

Winner of several literary prizes including a Jerusalem Prize in 2011, the Japanese sees his name often cited in the list of favorites for the Nobel Prize, which has however eluded him for several years. Very discreet and rarely appearing in public, Haruki Murakami is now translated into nearly 50 languages. Influenced by the work of Franz Kafka, he likes to mix literary genres, between magic realism, police investigation and even science fiction.
