Vaca Muerta and the elections: “Houston, we have changes”

2023-04-17 03:01:00

The elections for the governorship of Neuquén were not only closely followed throughout the country for being one of the first matches of the year, but also since United States, France, Norway, Germany and even Chinaand the reason is none other than the million-dollar investments that companies from those countries have in Vaca Muerta.

The final result that ended up giving victory to rolando figueroa to be the next governor of Neuquén, and with it of Vaca Muerta, It was not the result that the oil companies hoped for. But not because of who Figueroa is, but because of three scenarios that open up ahead and generate uncertaintysomething that the operators took for granted if the MPN continued in the government.

The first question mark that opens with the result on the table is what will happen in the almost 8 months until Figueroa takes office, considering that the activity in Vaca Muerta requires daily project approval by the Ministry of Energy.

The oldest fear of companies is that in this long impasse the oiled nlevel of approval of works is decoupled and end up hurting the level of overall oil and gas production activity.

“Who guarantees you that everything will continue as it is now if many people do not know if they will continue in office?” they raised from a company.

Who will be Neuquén’s Minister of Energy?

Linked to this is the second axis which is by no means minor and is who will be the next minister of Vaca Muerta, that is, the Minister of Energy of Neuquén. Alejandro Monteiro came to the position with the management of the Blue sector of the MPN, and since Figueroa’s assembly there has been no glimpse of who would be his replacement, a position almost as key for companies as the governor himself.

He third scenario of doubts that began with the elections is more long-term and has to do with the support that Figueroa had Mauricio Macri and the incidence that this may have in the next 4 years, according to the result of the presidential elections.

From the Argentine Institute of Oil and Gas (IAPG), the body that brings together the main production companies is summoned the candidates on the eve of the elections, including Figueroa. The talk had a good arrival to the firms, who synthesized that “it supports the development of Vaca Muerta as Koopmann does, so we do not see a problem with that.”

The doubts, or the fear, are in the long period of government transition and in as will be the assembly of the entire team Ministry of energy what has in its hallmark the definition of speed to which the development of a key sector can advance not only for Neuquén, but for the whole country, as is Dead cow.
