Tell me regarding your job!

Zoé Terrapon, 24, seamstress and costume designer, has recently had a workshop at the Toaâme circus school.

“I started with an apprenticeship as a clothing designer at the Friborg Sewing School in 2014. Then I obtained a post-professional artistic maturity. In the meantime, I went through internships to training as a costume designer. Since primary school, I knew that I wanted to embark on an artistic profession and it is naturally that I turned to sewing.

I have been working as a costume designer for a year and a half in collaboration with the Cirque Toaême and the theater of the Collège Saint-Michel and Sainte-Croix. These two mandates are fixed but I also had the chance to work on a short film as well as with various artists who hire me for their personal projects. In addition to my activity as a costume designer, I work two days a week in a sewing workshop that makes leather accessories.

Costume making goes through different stages. Generally, I have an initial interview with the director who explains the world of the show to me. Depending on this, I propose my ideas and modify them until they are validated. Then take measurements, followed by the search for fabrics and the fittings. At that time, I take note of the possible alterations to be made. Afterwards, it’s time for the spinning, that is to say the fitting of the costumes on stage in order to identify the last necessary changes.

To be a costume designer, I think you have to be inventive and curious. I like to immerse myself in what surrounds me to find inspiration. You have to enjoy touching different materials and techniques. You never do the same thing twice and that’s what I particularly like regarding my job. Every day I experiment and learn new things regarding my profession.” Estelle Rotzetter
