A five-member gang, which is said to have broken into villas on the outskirts of Vienna using the so-called window drill method and made rich booty from the burglaries, will have to answer to the regional court from Monday. The accused, all from Hungary, aged between 27 and 54, are accused of criminal association in addition to serious commercial burglary. The hearing is scheduled for two days.

One of the charges is also regarding robbery and deprivation of liberty: on May 28, 2019, 15 to 20 wristwatches worth 100,000 euros, a coin collection and cash were taken from a villa owner in Währing. The woman was then forced to reveal the code to her safe, which was eventually pried out of a wooden shoring with a crowbar. Content: jewelry worth 800,000 euros. The robbed woman was then tied up by the perpetrators with a cable and a cloth. According to the prosecution, there had already been an attempted break-in in the spring of 2018. The Vienna public prosecutor sees the accused as part of a larger, highly professional group that is said to have come together to commit property crimes.
