The 9-year-old boy was repeatedly beaten with his fists, beaten with a belt or even doused with ice or boiling water. Exhausted, the child did not hold on, lost consciousness and died as a result of the abuse inflicted on him.
Raul’s body was then placed in a sports bag which was dumped in a lake near Ghent, the Houtdok. Of Romanian origin, the child lived with his mother, her boyfriend and her 12-year-old sister.
The uncle of the young child spoke to our colleagues from the Nieuwsblad. “Yoana is 12 years old and she has seen it all. I can’t even imagine it. She is shocked. We are all in shock“, he explains.

For five years, Raul and his sister lived in Romania with their grandparents. Their mother came to Belgium in the hope of finding a job. The uncle explains that his parents were worried regarding not hearing from their grandchild: “My parents made a lot of phone calls and video calls with the kids. But they haven’t seen Raul for the past few months. My mother always asked: where is Raul? Can I talk to him? To which my sister answered that he was sleeping, that he was outside… She always had an excuse”.
The mother eventually confessed. “Ask no more questions regarding Raul, he is dead”, to which she added that it was her companion, the stepfather of the child who had beaten him to death. The whole family is in shock.
