A meeting devoted to pollen allergies was organized this Friday in Japan in the presence of the country’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The latter particularly insisted on the economic and human impact of the seasonal phenomenon. 40% of the Japanese population is prone to it, a survey has shown. A survey dating from 2020 had estimated the daily loss attributed to hay fever at the height of the season at 220 billion yen (regarding 1.5 billion euros).

The statesman called on officials to come up with control measures by next June. Allergies are particularly strong at this time of year, when areas of Japan covered in trees, especially cedars, release large amounts of pollen into the air.

To deal with the scourge, many Japanese people wear a mask or goggles. Prescriptions for allergy medications are also on the rise. The Prime Minister, for his part, said he was considering a national plan which might, for example, lead to replacing cedars with trees that release less pollen or using artificial intelligence to better predict the evolution of hay fever.
