“Jolanthe” and “Nutcracker” at the Salzburg State Theater: four eyes see more than two

Opera and ballet in one evening, is that possible? With Tchaikovsky’s “Iolanthe” and “The Nutcracker”, the Salzburg State Theater shows that a mix of genres doesn’t have to be half-hearted.

If you think of the “Nutcracker”, then Christmas spirit, mulled wine and ballet-loving children in evening performances come to mind. In the Salzburger Landestheater, winter and clichés remain outside the door on Saturday, the ravishingly uninhibited hustle and bustle on stage is more reminiscent of Christopher Street Day than Christmas Day. Gender roles are broken, the women sometimes lift the gentlemen, circus variety shows conquer the space, the rainbow-colored message penetrates through the monochrome white of the production.
