(Rome = Yonhap News) Correspondent Shin Chang-yong = A brown bear that attacked and killed a young man who was jogging in a village in the Alps region of northern Italy escaped death once more this time.

A court in northern Italy’s Trentino-Alto Adige state has put the brakes on an order to kill a ‘killer bear’ on the 14th (local time), daily newspaper ‘La Repubblica’ reported.

According to reports, the court ruled that the capture of the 17-year-old female brown bear ‘JJ4’ was allowed, but the killing was suspended until May 11.

Previously, Governor Maurizio Fugatti ordered the capture and killing of the JJ4 that fatally attacked Andrea Papi, who was jogging on the 5th.

LAV, an Italian animal protection organization, objected to this and filed an objection to the court, and the court accepted it.

JJ4 has a previous conviction of simultaneously attacking a father and son in a similar area in June 2020. State authorities attempted to kill JJ4, but were also stopped by the court at the time.

LAV welcomed the news on Twitter, saying, “The bears and the people of Trentino have the right to live in peace.”

“It’s not the bear’s fault, it’s not the son’s fault,” Papi’s mother said following her son’s funeral. “You can’t get Andrea back by killing the bear.”

Papi’s family opposed the killing of JJ4, but plan to sue the Italian government and state authorities for causing the tragedy by increasing the brown bear population out of control.

Papi’s family insisted in a statement that “someone is to blame for the lack of protection and prevention, and they cannot escape.”

The bear population in Trentino-Alto Adige is regarding 100 in 2021.

Another incident in which a person was attacked by a bear also occurred last month, and there are voices calling for control of the bear population in the area.

“One person is dead, and the court made an amazing decision,” Fugatti said. “Once the capture operation will continue.”

“La Repubblica” said authorities in Trentino-Alto Adige will capture JJ4 and release it to other regions, including foreign countries.
