Fear returns to Japan less than a year following the assassination attempt on former premier Shinzo Abe during an election rally. In the late morning of today, in the city of Wakayama, in the southwest of the archipelago, a bomb was detonated during a rally by the chief executive, Fumio Kishida, in support of the candidate of the Liberal Democratic party in view of the upcoming elections districts.
The explosion occurred near the port of Saikazaki. The police announced that they had arrested a man who threw an explosive device – similar to a paper bomb – in the direction of the premier, before being caught up and blocked by the police.
The bomb blast created confusion but resulted in no injuries in the crowd, and Kishida himself was unhurt in the incident.
