The US magazine Foreign Policy highlighted the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) in a new arms race between the main world powers.
Sputnik Brazil – The magazine also emphasizes that AI will be a great revolution in several areas, but mainly in combat tactics and strategies, and can completely change the scenario of a war.
According to the issue, AI promises to transform the geopolitics of warfare and deterrence, however, in ways that aren’t necessarily comfortable.
The technology also promises to make warfare less lethal and possibly strengthen deterrence, being deployed by military forces via AI-directed drones in air forces, navies and armies.
FP highlights the fact that AI can make decisions in a matter of minutes, instead of hours or days, making powers apply the technology in strategic and tactical matters, and even in a nuclear war.
However, Professor Herbert Lin, from Stanford University, alerts to the danger of excessive use of technology in sensitive issues, such as, for example, the command and control of weapons.
James Johnson of the University of Aberdeen is the author of the book “AI and the Bomb”, in which he cites the risks of an accidental nuclear war between the US and China, provoked by a rash decision by the AI.
Another danger highlighted by the magazine is the possibility of AI falling into the hands of terrorists who, in turn, might create dirty bombs or lethal devices.
The new AI arms race is underway, and there is likely little that can be done to stop it.
“That [a IA] might induce a human error of overdependence. It’s a precision-guided munition once morest human intelligence and rationality,” Lin points out.
