The List of Drugs for Urgent Public Health Needs (the List) contains the following drug information: brand name, medicinal ingredients, route of administration, strength, dosage form, and code or identification number assigned abroad by the country in which the sale of the medicinal product is authorised, if applicable.
The List also contains other information from the notification submitted by the public health official, including: the foreign regulatory body that authorized the drug, the country of origin, the province or territory of Canada that presented a notice (i.e. the province or territory in which the drug can be sold), the urgent public health need, the intended use or purpose (i.e. the reason why the drug is to be used in the province or territory of Canada) and the date of the public health official’s opinion.
The public health officer’s notification allows the importation into Canada and sale of a listed drug, for one (1) year, in the province or territory that submitted the notification. If the advisory is not renewed by a public health official within twelve months of the submission of the initial advisory, the drug may no longer be imported or sold. Drugs may also be removed from the List at any time at the Minister’s discretion.
A drug is eligible for importation and sale only if all columns of the List are completed, including the columns under the “For your information” subheading.
