Rabat, Oujda and Casablanca alone have 3,517 refugees

Refugees and asylum seekers are still numerous in Morocco. According to the latest available statistics from the High Commission for Refugees in Morocco (HCR), the country had 18,877 refugees and asylum seekers at the end of February 2023. Thus, the number of refugees stood at 9,866 as of February 28. 2023. Syrian refugees still come first with a total of 5,575. As for other nationalities, the Central African Republic comes in second place with 1,168 refugees. Next come Yemen with 877 refugees, South Sudan (335), Côte d’Ivoire (299), Sudan (277), Palestine (196), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (183), Cameroon (182 ), Guinea (176), Senegal (119), Mali (61), Nigeria (31), Chad (8) and the Republic of Gambia (2).
According to UNHCR data, men outnumber women. There are 6,191 male refugees (62.8%) once morest 3,675 female refugees (37.2%). The breakdown by age shows 66% of the refugees, or 6,507, are between the ages of 18 and 59. It should be noted that 23.6% of the overall refugee population is made up of children aged 0 to 12, i.e. a total of 2,320 (1,131 aged 0 to 5 and 1,189 aged 6 to 12). 60 years represent only 2.7% (269).As regards the level of education of the refugees, 21% have no school level, 34% have the primary level, 24% have the secondary level and 18 % have a high level of education (university).As for their former occupation, in their country of origin, 23.7% of refugees worked in the tertiary sector (services, liberal profession).Also according to statistics According to UNHCR, 25.9% were unemployed, 9% are students while 6.8% worked in the primary sector mainly in agriculture, only 1.7% were employed in the secondary sector (industry).
Rabat alone has 1,535 refugees
The UNHCR reports that Rabat continues to host the largest number of refugees with a figure established at 1,535 (15.6%). The city of Oujda comes in second place with 1,011 refugees (10.2%). In third position is the city of Casablanca with 971 refugees (9.8%). Next come the cities of Marrakech (580), Fez (501), Meknes (466), Kenitra (441) and Salé (432).
It should be noted that 28.6% of refugees registered with the UNHCR in Morocco, or 2,826, have specific needs. Among these refugees, there are 467 with a serious medical condition, 852 children in risk situations, 71 elderly people at risk, 202 women in risk situations.
In addition, it should be noted that 56 refugees were victims of torture. Regarding asylum seekers, their number stood at 9,011 at the end of February 2023. They come mainly from Guinea with 2,325 applicants, followed by Senegal (1,609), Sudan (1,211), Ivory Coast (960), Cameroon (628), Mali (625), Nigeria (410), Democratic Republic of Congo (216), Republic of Gambia (172), Chad (128), South Sudan (36), Central African Republic (19), Yemen (6 ) and Syria (4).
