Biden begins trip to Northern Ireland and Ireland

US President Joe Biden is leaving for a trip to Northern Ireland and Ireland this Tuesday. Biden first flies to the Northern Irish capital of Belfast, where he is expected in the evening. His program, which starts on Wednesday, includes a meeting with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and a speech to students. Biden wants to recognize the Good Friday Agreement for Northern Ireland negotiated 25 years ago and the progress that has been made since then.

The treaty ended the 1998 civil war between Protestant supporters of union with Britain and Catholic supporters of reunification with the Republic of Ireland.

Biden then wants to travel to the Irish capital Dublin on Wednesday, where a speech in front of Parliament is planned. The US President is also on a personal search for clues in Ireland. His family has Irish roots. The 80-year-old’s ancestors once emigrated from Ireland to the United States. Biden wants to visit several places where his ancestors came from.
