Presentation of reinforced concrete: Complete file

The first reinforced concrete structure was designed in 1855 by French engineer Joseph Lambot. Since then, this material has become widely used in the field of construction (buildings, bridges, retaining walls are made of it). The field of the arts is not to be outdone since certain works are made entirely or partially of reinforced concrete, such as the structure of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro or the church of Raincy. Its multiple advantages are the source of its worldwide success.

This article is the first in a series devoted to reinforced concrete. It aims to make a brief presentation of this material: following a reminder of the principle of this type of concrete, it then describes its advantages and disadvantages, the possible uses, as well as the standardization in force.
