Seoul Transportation Corporation’s MZ union defeats both unions and elects workers’ representatives ‘great change’

[이데일리 송승현 기자] In the Seoul Transportation Corporation worker representative election, an extraordinary event occurred in which the MZ generation (millennial + Z generation) union won the election by defeating a single candidate from the two major union federations.

According to the Seoul Transportation Corporation on the 10th, in the worker representative election for the formation of the Occupational Safety and Health Committee (sanan committee) of the sales headquarters, where station workers are the main axis, Candidate Jae-young Heo of the ‘Right Labor Union’ led by the MZ generation won 55.19% (1899 votes). voted and was elected.

In this election, not only candidate Heo but also candidate Lim Jeong-wan of the two major unions, the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), cast their votes, but were defeated. Candidate Lim, who placed second, received 44.81% (1542 votes), with a gap of 10.38 percentage points (357 votes). This is the first time that the MZ generation union has defeated the KCTU candidate in the Seoul Transportation Corporation employee representative election.

In particular, the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) received a report card of failure despite running a unified candidate with the Korean Federation of Trade Unions (FKTU) once morest Candidate Heo. Currently, the composition of union members in the sales headquarters is more than half, with the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and the Korean Federation of Trade Unions accounting for 43% and 10%, respectively. The proportion of right unions is known to be 31%.

An official from the corporation explained, “It seems to be the result of the voices of union members that the two major unions need a different look from the current labor movement.”

Meanwhile, the right union centered on the MZ generation was launched in August 2021. The Righteous Union plans to issue a challenge to other headquarters worker representatives within the corporation. In addition to the Sales Headquarters, the Corporation elects workers’ representatives from the Industrial Health and Safety Committee from four locations: the Vehicle Headquarters, Flight Management Headquarters, and Technical Headquarters.
