Civil servants from prefectures all over the country have gone on a general strike since Monday, starting at 8:00 a.m.
Approximately 18,000 employees of the prefectures in Romania started a general strike starting on Monday, April 10. They are dissatisfied that the staff from the prefectures are not paid at the level of state public functions. Trade unionists claim that the law that would solve this problem lies in Parliament.
Currently, a civil servant with higher education is paid at the level of a worker, said Cosmin Enescu, the president of the Equality Union of Civil Servants.
“We will interrupt the activity, that is, no service will work at the level of the prefect’s institutions throughout the country. It will take time for our claims to be resolved. The institution of the Prefect has become the Cinderella of the administration. An official from a prefecture with higher education is at the level of a qualified worker from a town hall, who does not have any education. A skilled worker can be the one guarding the town hall following the program ends. Or, such a thing is not possible. I’ve run out of patience.”
All counters will be closed during the strike, except for passports, permits and registrations.
The protest will move to the Parliament if the deputies delay the adoption of the law requested by the civil servants in the prefectures.
