Several hundred people gathered on Sunday in Tunis to demand the release of around twenty opponents arrested since the beginning of last February, once morest a backdrop of alleged charges of “conspiracy once morest state security”.
Responding to the call of the Front du Salut National (FSN), a Tunisian political opposition coalition, around 300 demonstrators chanted slogans calling for the release of opponents, arrested as part of a large security crackdown, targeting public and political figures.
On this occasion, the president of the DSF, Néjib Chebbi called for the unification of the opposition forces and to set up a dialogue involving several national bodies among the trade unions and human rights associations.
This approach aims to overcome the persistent political and economic crisis in Tunisia, he continued, explaining that national unity is the only way out of the economic and financial crisis.
For his part, Riadh Chaibi, member of the Front and leader of the Ennahdha movement, noted that the various marches organized to demand the release of the detainees in the case of “conspiracy once morest the State” and the resumption of the democratic process, will continue. until the achievement of its objectives and the restoration of freedoms.
In early February, Tunisia experienced a series of arrests of politicians, opposition figures, civil society activists, media officials and trade unionists, prompting a wave of outrage from several NGOs in defense of human rights.
These arrests, denounced locally and internationally, targeted leading political figures of the FSN and its main component, the Islamist party Ennahdha.
