Genesis has not said its last word with its new coupe SUV

The concept of the GV80 Coupé not only announces the next production model of the Korean manufacturer, it also hints at the new design.

The large SUV GV80 from Genesis receives a coupé version and thus competes with the Porsche Cayenne Coupé, the BMW X6 and the Mercedes GLE Coupé.

“Genesis is running out of models” is a common complaint. Indeed, following its commercial launch in Europe, the high-end subsidiary of Hyundai released its models in a chain and at a frantic pace in dealerships in order to be able to offer a complete range as quickly as possible. The models were already developed, considering that Genesis has been present in the national market as well as in the United States for a longer time. Since the summer of 2021, the Koreans have launched six models with us, some of which have been supplemented with electric versions. It is obvious that this pace cannot be maintained.

That said, we were able to see on site, at the Namyang development center, where the manufacturer presented its prospects for the next few years, that the argument that the Korean premium brand would have nothing more to offer was unfounded. . And as much to say that he is far from having said his last word. “Our ambition is to further enhance the performance and dynamism of Genesis with even more emotional vehicles,” said design chief Luc Donckerwolke. One of these models, or at least a concept that comes very close to the production model, has just been unveiled at the New York Auto Show: the GV80 Coupe concept, a coupe variant of the large SUV.

With its distinctive Crest grille and long hood, the concept is clearly inspired by the G80 SUV, but features elements of the styling language to come. The roofline descends from the B-pillar to the edge of the rear spoiler. The passenger compartment, largely taken from the GV80, includes four bucket seats with carbon fiber backrests as well as a robust strut bar to stabilize the body, a feature which is however unlikely to be carried over to the model of series.

Even if Genesis is careful not to provide information on the engine for the time being, it seems obvious that the production version will take over the six-cylinder engines of the GV80, which develop up to 279 kW/380 hp in the SUV model. One might also imagine a four-cylinder developing up to 183 kW/249 hp. No data is available on launch date or pricing. The new model should not be marketed before 2024.
