Ireland: US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will reportedly meet next week. The two heads of state will meet in Northern Ireland. Both will be in Ireland to attend events to mark the 25th anniversary of the Dukha Vli Peace Treaty. Joe Biden visited the Irish border at a time of heightened political uncertainty in Northern Ireland.
Sunak will greet Biden as he arrives on Air Force One Tuesday evening. As part of the annual commemoration, Rishi Sunak is organizing a gala dinner on Wednesday. Biden, who often speaks proudly of his Irish roots, will also spend time in the Irish Republic. He will also visit his ancestral homes in Dublin.
The Sad Silver Agreement, signed on 10 April 1998, ended the three decades of apartheid that had rocked Northern Ireland since the late 1960s. A row with Northern Ireland’s pro-British Unionist Party over power-sharing as part of the peace deal had previously cast a shadow over the celebrations.
Britain’s M15 intelligence agency reported in March that there had been a major increase in domestic terrorism in Northern Ireland. Although the risk of attack is high, it is believed that the new move will not be linked to the anniversary.
