30,000-year-old mummified squirrel found in Yukon

A furball found in the Yukon has turned out to be a mummified arctic squirrel from around 30,000 years ago.

The Beringia Interpretation Center in the Yukon conducted X-ray imaging to come to this conclusion.

In a Facebook post, she shared some photos of this specimen, which was discovered in 2018, according to local media outlet Yukon News.

“It’s amazing to think that this little specimen roamed the Yukon thousands of years ago,” the Center posted on Facebook.

The arctic squirrel was well adapted to the climate of the time.

This species might drop its body temperature as low as -2.9 degrees Celsius when hibernating.

It was found in particular in the northern territories of Canada, but also in Alaska and Russia.

She is still there today.

The mummified specimen will soon be included in a new exhibition at the Beringia Interpretation Center.
