Government adjourns FPÖ application and thus prevents a quick solution
Vienna (OTS) – It has just become public that honey from third countries often turns out to be fake. The Liberal Agricultural Spokesman NAbg. Peter Schmiedlechner commented on the current debate: “I have long pointed out the problems with honey from unknown sources with parliamentary questions and with a request for a precise indication of origin.”
“The designation ‘honey from EU and non-EU countries’ means that there might be honey from all over the world in the package and is therefore completely meaningless. The countries of origin and the proportion of honey from the individual countries are not known to the consumer. In addition, discounters refer to the honey as ‘made in Austria’, no matter where it comes from. For example, it is honey from EU and non-EU countries that was bottled in Austria. That’s enough to present the honey as an Austrian product,” criticized Schmiedlechner.
“Here you can only harvest ‘ripe’ honey, in China and other countries it can also happen that it is taken from the beehives earlier, i.e. ‘unripe’. The nectar is industrially dried because it still has a high water content. In some cases, the honey is also partially diluted with rice syrup. This is difficult for the customer to see. We Liberals demand precise identification of the origin of honey. It may only be marked “Made in Austria” if all production stages have taken place in Austria!” Schmiedlechner reiterated his call for better labeling and pointed out that the corresponding FPÖ application was unfortunately postponed by the governing parties on March 21, 2023 was, so the solution moves far away.
