Vallejo: “As a government we have the responsibility of not falling into political smallness”

The Government spokesperson, Camila Vallejo, referred to public safety issues this Thursday, following the death of the first corporal, Daniel Palma, who was shot on Wednesday night in the center of Santiago and later died in the former Posta Central.

After the announcement made by President Gabriel Boric regarding the progress in the implementation of the Street Plan without Violencethe Secretary of State commented that “We have seen all kinds of statements these last few weeks and particularly the last few hours. As a government, we have the responsibility of not falling into political pettiness and not responding to political pettiness, regardless of the statement of the politician who comes”.

In this sense, he stated that “This is a moment of shock, pain, and citizens need the powers of the State and particularly the Executive Power, independent of the pain and anger that is being felt, to act rationally and with temperance. As the president of the Chamber said and that ‘we also work to scratch where it itches’”.

“For many years, if not decades, citizens have had to listen to grandiose phrases, political fights, wedge wars, uses of the legitimate fear of the population and their feeling of insecurity to campaign politically or to hit the next door, and so on. We have not advanced as far as we have to advance”, he added.

In this way, he stated that “Our concern, our center is to act rationally with temperance with a sense of unity and with an adequate articulation and coordination of the powers of the State.”

Finally, the minister made a call “to order, to rationality, a call to join the sense of responsibility and not to the political use of a moment that is difficult for the country.”

“This is not a game, the safety of people is not a game and we have to protect the safety of both citizens and our police, therefore the call is to work,” he said.
