Throughout this masterclass, organized from our Online Official Master’s Degree in Third Generation Psychological Therapieswill be exposed Functional Analytical Psychotherapy (FAP; Kohlenberg & Tsai, 1991; Tsai et al., 2009) which is conceived as a behavioral intervention to address complex clinical problems that occur in daily life. Therapists can observe and evoke these problem behaviors during the clinical session, the therapeutic alliance being essential as a vehicle for clinical change during the therapy itself.
Functional Analytical Psychotherapy (FAP) is one of the so-called third generation therapiesof behavioral and contextual origin, which applies the principles of functional analysis in solving complex psychological problems in adults.
The clinical objectives when performing Functional Analytical Psychotherapy are aimed at observing and provoking clinically relevant behaviors, differentially and contingently reinforcing more adaptive behavior in the session. Empirical evidence shows that FAP is a effective approach to achieve clinical improvements in different settings and conditionsalso produces synergistic effects in combination with other approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy among other modalities.
This masterclass will illustrate how the therapist uses the therapeutic relationship itself to help people develop more effective skills in the session itself, and for the patient to try these new behaviors outside of it.
