Public transport price increase

GA price over 4000 francs – is it worth switching to a car now?

The GA travelcard will break the 4,000-franc mark at the end of the year. Is it worth switching from the GA travelcard to a car for commuters, or will public transport still be cheap? We’ll do the math.

All public transport prices are becoming more expensive and once more one asks oneself: Does the car now make more sense? We calculate what the vehicle currently costs per year.

Riccardo Castellano / Dall-E

  • Public transport prices will increase at the end of 2023 strong once more following seven years.

  • The GA now costs 4,080 francs – around a thousand francs more than 15 years ago.

  • Depending on the need, cars are becoming an increasingly popular alternative.

  • The Stromer in particular will probably conquer the market in the future.

The Alliance SwissPass increases following seven years the public transport prices. Single tickets, half-fare travelcards and especially the GA travelcard will be more expensive at the end of the year. The GA travelcard will be 5.1 percent more expensive and will cost CHF 4,080 from December. The main reasons: new investments, inflation and higher operating costs. Will the car now also become an attractive alternative in terms of price for die-hard commuters?

When it comes to such questions, first of all: There is no clear yes or no. It depends on which work route is available, how often per week it is used and what standards are expected. In addition, driving a car has also become noticeably more expensive in recent months. Higher commodity prices, supply chain issues and the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine are all impacting on costs. In contrast, vehicles today consume less fuel. That makes the calculation complex.

“A car costs 11,260 francs a year, at a kilometer price of 75 centimes.”

Vanessa Flack, Mediensprecherin TCS

The TCS has already set the average price per kilometer in Switzerland for 2023, which is 75 centimes. It was calculated with a new car that costs 39,000 francs. The average mileage is 15,000 kilometers. “With fixed costs of CHF 6,543 and variable costs of CHF 4,717, this results in an annual amount of CHF 11,260,” says TCS media spokeswoman Vanessa Flack. According to this calculation, the vehicles are written off following nine years and 135,000 km.

Calculated purely on the basis of the average costs that accumulate each year when purchasing a car, the GA travelcard is and will remain cheaper for individuals. But it doesn’t always have to stay that way in the future.

For the first time, SBB is selling more single tickets than the GA – so alternatives are becoming increasingly popular.

Electric cars cheaper in the long term

The price increase is now bitter for many long-term commuters, who pay around a thousand francs more for a GA travelcard than they did 15 years ago. In 2008, a GA still cost CHF 3,100. The costs per passenger kilometer are higher in rail transport, in road transport too, but there a certain type of car excels. “It’s exciting to see that electric vehicles are cheaper than combustion engines in the long term,” says Flack. Only three percent of the population currently have an electric car, but this number is increasing every year.

You can find individual model calculations with three specific car types in the photo gallery above. We compared the cost of a Tesla Model Y, VW Golf and Porsche 911. It becomes clear: Although the acquisition costs of an electric car are often higher, in the long term the annual operating costs are lower (see graphic).

According to TCS, electric cars have lower energy and service costs than combustion engines.

TCS

Thomas Sauter-Servaes, mobility researcher at the ZHAW, also confirms that e-cars are becoming more and more worthwhile: “If the efficiency of the batteries increases over the years and the prices become more attractive due to more competition in the market, I see e-cars as strong competition the burners.” Electricity prices are basically not as volatile as those for petrol or diesel, especially if it will be possible to produce your own electricity.

The fact that there will be no new passenger cars in the EU by 2035 also speaks in favor of e-cars as an option for the future with diesel or petrol more can be sold. If it becomes realistic for you to switch from a public transport subscription to a car in the future, it makes sense to take a look at electric models.

But even here there are factors that differ from person to person. This also includes the availability of charging stations near the place of residence. You can find out whether there are currently enough pillars in your municipality or city here out of here. If you drive abroad a lot, you also have to check whether there are enough charging options on the way and at the destination.

Option Carsharing

Car sharing is also a way to save money. However, it is primarily used for short distances: “Most routes are covered by bike or public transport, and shared cars are only used occasionally,” says Stefan Roschi from Mobility. Combined with public transport, you save up to 5,000 francs a year with car sharing compared to a private car, says Roschi.

In the service box you will find tips on how you can best approach your future commuting life in the future.

There is no one-size-fits-all calculation. If you have different public transport subscriptions, distributed among a family, you calculate differently than a single household with a car. Work distance, workload, home office – all individual factors. This way you can get an overview of which alternatives might be more attractive for you and whether the GA travelcard or the car is worth it for you personally:

  • TCS cost calculator: The TCS car search provides an overview of costs for individual car brands, whether petrol, diesel or electric. Several cars can also be compared (see image gallery). The calculator is primarily helpful for new buyers.

  • SBB.ch: info to single ticket, route subscription-, half-fare and GA prices can be found on the SBB website. Note the price increases from December 2023:

Single tickets, day and multi-journey tickets as well as class changes cost 4.3 percent more (Bern → Zurich, there and back, currently: 102 francs, from December 106.50 francs).

Half-Fare travelcard: The price increases from 185 190 Franken.

General subscription: from 3860 to 4080 Franken.

  • Mobility: Car sharing makes sense for people who are only slightly dependent on the car. Especially in combination with public transport. Costs for specific routes can be found here at the provider Mobility.
