Murmuring in your sleep may indicate mental illness, epilepsy, or Parkinson’s disease.

Indistinct muttering or whole phrases – for sure, many have come across talking in a dream. Or maybe they themselves when they blurted out too much. However, such people usually do not hear their speeches. Somnologist Igor Timokhin assures: if in the morning the balabol does not show excessive nervousness, lethargy, lethargy, there is nothing to worry regarding. In some cases, sleep-talking (or somniloquia) is considered a pathology.

One in 20 adults and one in five children talk periodically during sleep. In childhood, when there are a lot of emotions, and the nervous system is still immature, the brain often reacts to experienced events in a similar way. This can happen several times a night.

– If conversations happen in the fast phase of sleep, a person actively moves his eyeballs, can stand up, sometimes even clearly answers questions, – the expert explains. – But more often episodes of somniloquia occur during shallow non-REM sleep. With the help of pronunciation and mumbling, the sleeper facilitates the transition to another stage, as if lulling himself. Usually this phenomenon is harmless – if it does not disturb those who are nearby. But it can scare: for example, a child points to a corner, assuring that someone is standing there. He does it unconsciously, but it’s still creepy.

The tendency to sleep-talk is usually inherited and is more common in men. Most likely, this phenomenon is associated with the stress experienced the day before. And not necessarily negative, maybe, on the contrary, a bright and powerful event.

What do you mean

In some cases, sleep-talking may be associated with psychiatric disorders and neurodegenerative changes. Things to watch out for:

  • conversations in the night occur at the same time;
  • when trying to wake the speaker behaves aggressively;
  • speech is accompanied by cries, laughter, howls, curses, active movements;
  • the voice and intonations of the sleeping person are very different from the usual ones;
  • the process is accompanied by gnashing of teeth, delirium, sharp movements of the arms or legs.

With such symptoms, it is worth doing an electroencephalogram of the brain during a night’s sleep in order to exclude epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, and other problems. Excessively excitable patients, doctors prescribe drugs to improve cerebral circulation, so that sleep is calm.

A find for a spy

In a dream, you can easily give out secret data – however, experts believe that the sleeper says only what he said in reality the day before. So if a husband snoring next to him mutters the name of another woman, he deserves at least a kick in the side. There must have been something the day before.

like paralyzed

Late night conversations can be conducted in a state of sleep paralysis. In this case, the muscles are blocked before falling asleep, or awakening occurs before it declines. This phenomenon is opposite to somnambulism, when muscle paralysis does not occur during sleep. A few seconds or minutes on the verge of sleep and wakefulness a person:

  • is conscious but unable to move or speak;
  • feels someone else’s presence in the room;
  • feels like someone or something is pressing on the chest, choking, dragging down;
  • is experiencing intense fear.

Touch or sounds can interrupt and return to normal.

Karen Slavik-Lennard and her husband Adam are selling records of his late-night chatter

All hands in fingers

Briton Karen Slavik-Lennard, tired of her husband’s nightly performances, recorded his sayings on a dictaphone and published it on the social network. The popularity of the blog has gone up. The couple opened an online store where they sell t-shirts, bags, aprons and lingerie with Adam’s phrases – examples below. Agree, great business idea.

  • “Hey, I know you, but I don’t like your face. Take it off… Yes, that’s much better, much better.”
  • “I love you! No, I didn’t say that, I didn’t say that. I just coughed… mmm-h-h-m-m… coughed.”
  • “Give me back my hands! Limb thief. You have all your hands in your fingers.”
  • “Of course I listen to you. I just can’t bring myself to leave. Walk away and drown in your own tears.”
  • “I didn’t gain weight at all. It’s your fat eyes.”
  • “Hey, don’t say anything. Why don’t you e-mail it, then I’ll happily ignore it.”
  • “I don’t want to die! I love sex. And furry animals.
  • “Don’t leave the duck there. This is completely irresponsible. Put her on a swing, let her rejoice.
  • “I can’t control kittens. Too many mustaches!”
  • “Vampire penguins? Zombie guinea pigs? We are finished…”
  • “I like that you are a moose. Yes. So fluffy, fluffy.”
  • “If I wanted to see a long nose and a fat ass, I would look at a horse.”
  • “You are cute. Sweet-sweet-sweet. Now get out of here and be nice somewhere else. I’m sick of. Tsok-tsok, tsok-tsok. Make sure your hooves don’t rattle! Who brought the horse into the bedroom? A*a*a… Looks like I’m sleeping in a shed.”

Repetition of the past

Sometimes the subconscious shows a dream that we think we have already seen. Recurring night visions may be related to a traumatic experience that has been repressed but is trying to break through into consciousness. It is worse for the psyche if there were no such dreams. Then this trauma would find a way out through the body, but it would be more difficult to understand what it is connected with.

Close your eyes!

For those who cannot sleep for a long time, experts advise:

  1. Breathe through the left nostril. This activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the work of the body during the period of relaxation.
  2. Eat a banana or avocado. The magnesium they contain promotes the production of melatonin. The element can also be found in wheat bran, legumes, and lean meats.
  3. Use earplugs and an eye mask. Lack of lighting and noise will increase the quality of night rest.

By the way

  • In the international classification of sleep disorders, sleep-talking is classified as a conditionally normal manifestation.
