In France, 140,000 strokes or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) occur each year and one person out of 6 will be the victim of a AVC During his life. Age, family history, certain diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure are among the risk factors for stroke.

A new risk factor has just been discovered. A new study published in October in the journal Neurology show that the type of blood group may play a role in the early onset of early stroke.

More risk of early stroke for groups A and B

Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in the United States conducted a meta-analysis of 48 different studies. They collected data from nearly 576,000 people aged between 18 and 59 and living on different continents. Among the volunteers, some had suffered an ischemic stroke (the most common) and the majority had never suffered one. The authors grouped the participants according to their A, AB, B and O blood types, and divided the strokes into three categories: early, late and no stroke.

According to their analyses, people with blood groups A and B were most at risk of early stroke. The risk was 16% higher in group A than in the others. As for the participants in group B, they had 11% more risk to have a stroke. On the contrarypeople in group O had a 12% lower risk of having a stroke.

This higher risk in people in groups A and B was, on the other hand, less visible following 60.

Lower risk than smoking and high blood pressure

Researchers have no no explanation found to give. Further studies need to be conducted to find an answer. However, “it is important to emphasize that people with blood type A should not be particularly concerned regarding their risk of strokeexplain the authors of the study. Blood type is a much lower risk factor than other stroke risk factors modifiable, such as hypertension and smoking. For people who want to reduce their risk of stroke, these are the main factors to consider.”
