It’s always the same unpleasant news that cheesemaker Monika Liehl has to deliver to the many vegetarians among her customers. Namely that for ethical reasons it makes no sense to eat goat cheese and at the same time avoid goat meat. “As is well known, every mother animal has to be pregnant before milk is produced,” says Liehl, “and naturally, on average, the same number of female as male young animals are born. The question arises: If you want your mother’s milk, what should you do with it the male fawns, if not kill them and eat them?”
