Two weeks ago, with the support of the governments of Salta and Jujuy, the tobacco chambers and producer associations agreed to a 120% increase in the price of Virginia tobacco, however, Minister Massa’s announcement of the creation of a special dollar for agriculture, it once once more focuses on the price of the product.
“It was conditioned that if there was any definition regarding the export duty paid by tobacco or any change in the exchange rate, the parties should meet once more,” explained journalist Germán Salomón in Let’s Talk regarding Politics.
Thus – he completed – in the next few days the dialogue will be opened once more to redefine the aforementioned percentage increase and, in this way, they seek a price that is more convenient for producers.
Meanwhile, Salomón pointed out that provinces such as Tucumán and Corrientes had achieved an increase of 130% and 160% respectively; “But we are talking regarding provinces with different circumstances and with different tobaccos,” he warned.
However, he informed that the great problem that Salta and Jujuy face is produced in the area and is not in Argentina.
“It is smuggled to Brazil and there they pay the producer much more than what he receives here; there is a massive smuggling of tobacco”, concluded the specialist.
