When people live in acceptable conditions, they spend the days and years enjoying personal and family life, the tranquility and joy of the community environment and the company of good neighbors. Families that live well, see their daughters and sons grow up, attend school, dedicate a few moments to recreation and do their best so that everyone is very well. In rural areas, very few families enjoy acceptable conditions since the majority live in extreme poverty. for multiple reasons. Faced with this sad and painful reality, members or entire families emigrate in search of means of survival.
The emigration What was known and experienced in the 1970s was more the emigration of families from the country’s highlands to the south coast in search of temporary jobs on coffee, cotton, and sugar cane farms. A short time later, due to the increase in poverty, many families began to emigrate to the important cities of the country and to different municipalities on the Mexican side. This emigration was accentuated as a consequence of the internal armed conflict, but it has also facilitated the fact of having quite close cultural elements, particularly for the Mayan population that lives on both sides. Nor should it be ignored that families with more determination and possibly to preserve their lives left, perhaps never to return, emigrated to the United States.
Years go by, generations of people go by, governments come and go from power and from the opportunity to build development with concrete results for families with limited economic resources.. Unfortunately, the conditions of poverty continue and nothing has happened, there are no solutions on the part of any government, there is an increasing population and thousands also become part of those who live in extreme poverty. The lack of concern for solutions to poverty is reflected in the strategies and actions carried out by the highest level authorities and municipal governments. For a long time, every four years, the candidates offer everything to eliminate poverty, but nothing is accomplished. It is also known by many Guatemalans that some candidates for President of the Republic travel to offer everything for compatriots who work in the United States, but there is a lack of concrete actions both for those who live abroad and for relatives who stay in our country.
being sensible, there are no conditions to avoid emigration in a context where the common thing is the lack of sources of work, some job opportunities pay wages below the minimum wage, the adult population is more for agricultural activities without high technology requirements, those who have graduated from primary school and the middle level cannot find work anywhere, there is a lack of small, medium-sized and large companies to operate in municipalities with a high percentage of poverty. In these impoverished areas, nobody with large capital manages to open sources of work, nobody invests and then hunger, pain, sadness, misery abound and human development is far away.
Even with so many dangers in sight, including death, each week many young men and women emigrate to the United States with the hope of finding work and, as a consequence, improving the conditions of personal life and those of their families. Our condolences to the families who suffer the pain of the loss of a relative in the recent event in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico.
