Local supply in need – fewer and fewer bakers in the country

TV magazine “Land und Leute” on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at 4:30 p.m. on ORF 2

St. Polten (OTS) In Austria, an average of 25 bakeries have closed each year in the last 10 years. Especially in the country a problem in the local supply. We bring a report using the example of a bakery in Willendorf am Steinfelde in Lower Austria. She too is threatened with extinction because the master baker is retiring and no successor has yet been found. Two branches in Willendorf and in Puchberg am Schneeberg are affected. Jobs are lost.
The reasons for the development are complex. According to the head of the bakers’ guild, Josef Schroth, there is no shortage of bakers, but the increasing number of entrepreneurial tasks are a barrier. However, he also sees an opportunity here to recruit career changers as bakery operators.
