Diakonie calls for its own “Ukrainian law”

Because at present, refugees from Ukraine still have a limited status as displaced persons. This has to be extended once more and once more, making integration in the labor market more difficult, said Diakonie director Maria Katharina Moser. “We have people who want to work, but we make it particularly difficult for them.”

A “Ukrainian Law”, similar to the right of residence for war-displaced citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1997, might also relieve the burden on the basic welfare system. According to Moser, quick access to the labor market is also important for the economy, particularly in times of labor shortages. Caritas President Michael Landau and Evangelical Lutheran Bishop Michael Chalupka have already spoken out in favor of such a law.
