DGI: mobilize more internal revenue

This is the main recommendation of the Minister of Finance, Louis Paul Motaze to the new Director General of Taxes, Roger Athanase Meyong Abath installed in his functions on April 5, 2023 in Yaoundé.

The projects awaiting the new Director General of Taxes are great. In the installation speech of Roger Athanase Meyong Abath, the Minister of Finance indicated that “the ambitions displayed in the new development strategy for 2030 (SND30) are clear. This obliges our administrations and the public sector in general, to step up a notch in the performance of their services”. To the new Director General of Taxes, Minister Louis Paul Motaze recommends “mobilizing more, but with a better quality of service and a better relationship with the taxpayer”.

The Minister of Finance noted with regret that the mobilization of non-oil internal resources of Cameroon stands at the end of 2022 at 2.255 billion. Which theoretically represents only 25% of the annual funding requirement of the SND30. There is therefore a gap of almost 6,700 billion to be found in oil resources and in indebtedness. “These constraints therefore lead us to consider that it is more internally that we should redouble our efforts, in order to hope to expand our financing possibilities externally,” maintains Minister Louis Paul Motaze.

Proposed solutions

The Minister of Finance presented some avenues to explore to the new Director General of Taxes. For him, it is necessary to emphasize the tax levy which takes place through the creation of wealth. It is a principle according to which, “the more wealth created, the more taxes there will be to collect”. “Fostering the creation of wealth would therefore inevitably lead, and it is my conviction, to an increase in the ability to pay” adds Louis Paul Motaze. With this in mind, it recommends that the new Director General organize regular meetings with the private sector and promote it.

In view of his proven professional experience in the field of taxation, the principal tax inspector, Roger Athanase Meyong Abath, will have to be up to these challenges.
