And Ryanair is not the only company in the case. It is even a context of global increase which is already being felt by travellers. It suffices to compare the price of destinations to observe more than substantial price increases. Some tickets have doubled or even tripled in recent months. In France, Le Parisien mentioned an increase of 22% in 2022, and more than 25% in 2023, for example.
But how to explain it? Because we are not talking regarding prices that simply follow inflation. We must first return to the health crisis which had nailed thousands of planes to the ground for several weeks. A huge shortfall, not to mention all the travel restrictions we have experienced around the world for more than two years. If the companies have offered attractive rates to bring back their customers, it is now necessary to recover the shortfall.
Are you afraid to fly? Here is the solution
We also think of the operating costs of companies that have exploded, and of course the rise in fuel prices. In short, all the elements are in place to make the plane a more expensive means of transport in the years to come, especially if we add taxes and measures to limit CO2 emissions from the air sector.
But that does not prevent (for the moment?) travelers from booking en masse. 2022 was an exceptional year, and 2023 does not seem to know the crisis. The companies even extend their offers to satisfy everyone. Latest example with TUI, which is strengthening its offer for winter 2023-2024. “For the first time, TUI is scheduling a daily flight to Sal Island, Cape Verde, this winter. And for the island of Boa Vista, also located in the Cape Verdean archipelago, the company plans three flights a week. […] The Canary Islands remain the safe bet par excellence of TUI’s winter offer. Additional direct flights have thus been planned from Ostend to Tenerife and Gran Canaria“, announces in particular the tour operator.
