Spring: can thyroid problems worsen?

The endocrinologist Zukhra Pavlova spoke regarding the obvious and not obvious symptoms of hypothyroidism.

“I have a friend who acted like a tired, burnt-out person, dissatisfied with himself and others,” says the doctor. – It seemed to everyone that he needed a psychologist or a psychotherapist … As a result, it turned out that the guy had hypothyroidism – a disease of the thyroid gland. After the examination, he was prescribed replacement therapy (one tablet on an empty stomach), and now he has become himself once more – cheerful, sociable, full of energy.

Why do many in the spring think regarding the fact that they have problems with the thyroid gland, specifically, a deficiency of thyroid hormones, that is, hypothyroidism? Because the symptoms are often similar to beriberi, but have a more pronounced effect.

Judge for yourself:

* Such patients do not want anything, are very lethargic, always tired and move little.

* They often have dry, faded skin, with a slightly yellowish tint (at the same time, bilirubin in the general blood test is normal, as are transaminases, and vitamins A and E were not overdosed).

* With general dryness of the skin, there is a feeling of puffiness (pasty) of the skin and the whole face (this kind also happens if you overate salty at night).

* Due to swelling of the skin, including around the eyes, the eyelids look swollen and the eyes swollen.

* Elbows become dry with a white coating.

* Hair is dull, brittle, falls out a lot.

* Sometimes even the tongue becomes swollen, some have a feeling that it does not fit in the mouth. There are distinct (or indistinct) imprints of teeth on the lateral surfaces.

* Patients also recall that their stools are irregular (not even every two days), and this has been a problem for some time now.

As you can see, these symptoms signal a variety of diseases, such as iron deficiency anemia. Also, many of them occur in people following severe SARS or on a strict diet. And, of course, following the winter – dry skin is due to the included batteries, dry elbows – from uncomfortable clothes, and so on …

But with hypothyroidism (and with any other problems with the gland – hyperthyroidism, thyrotoxicosis, subacute thyroiditis) there can be one unequivocal symptom: when swallowing, something always interferes, as if some kind of knot in the throat. And with an increase in the volume of the thyroid gland, it will become noticeable to the eye. And if you feel the neck, you feel swelling in the region of the larynx.

If this symptom is adjacent to all of the above, then it’s definitely time to first see a therapist so that he prescribes a general blood test, biochemistry and tests for thyroid hormones. And then, if necessary, to the endocrinologist.
